1. Mrs. Sham Stewart was at first reluctant to accept the post offered as she wished to nurse, but not to superintend.
However, after considerable pressure had been brought to bear she finally consented. Sidney Herbert wrote personally expressing his gratitude.(See Stanmore, Lord Herbert of Lea, vol. I)
