F.N. suggests that hard business in a great establishment would be too bewildering for a 40 year old 'fid-fad' - not that F.N. knows Miss James is a 'fid-fad'; the person to begin should be nearer 30 than 40; If a momin is not an old matron by the time she is 40, she is an old maid'; F.N. was an old matron before she was 34 when she took on the Crimean hospitals; Agnes was an old matron before she was 29 when she took on the Liverpool Workhouse Infirmary.
